Best service and food! I get the green chicken enchiladas in for tortillas with charro beans. AMAZING!! Manny is amazing as well! I hope you're lucky enough to get him as your waiter.
Overview
Walking into Pericos Mexican Restaurant at 10820 Bandera Rd, San Antonio, TX 78250, United States feels like stepping into a familiar neighborhood spot where the staff already knows what youβre about to order. Iβve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long workday, and that consistency is what keeps me coming back. From the moment you sit down, the pace is relaxed, the aromas are bold, and the experience feels genuine rather than staged.
The menu leans heavily into classic Mexican comfort food, and it does so confidently. One of my go-to orders is the carne guisada plate, slow-simmered until tender and rich, served with warm tortillas that actually taste handmade. A server once explained how the kitchen preps their stews early in the day to allow flavors to develop naturally, which lines up with what food science tells us about collagen breakdown and flavor concentration during slow cooking. According to data published by the USDA, braising meats at low temperatures significantly improves texture and moisture retention, and you can taste that care here.
Breakfast is a quiet standout that locals often rave about in reviews. The chilaquiles, topped with eggs and house-made salsa, strike a balance between crispy and saucy thatβs hard to pull off. I remember chatting with a regular who said he drives across town every Sunday just for that plate, calling it best comfort breakfast in the area. That kind of loyalty doesnβt come from hype; it comes from repetition done right.
What sets this place apart isnβt just the food, though. Itβs how the restaurant operates day in and day out. The staff turnover is low, which is something the National Restaurant Association has identified as a key factor in maintaining service quality and customer trust. Familiar faces mean smoother service, better communication, and fewer mistakes. On busy nights, even when the dining room fills up fast, orders arrive hot and accurate more often than not.
Portion sizes are generous without being wasteful, and pricing stays reasonable compared to other Mexican diners in San Antonio. This matters, especially as recent Bureau of Labor Statistics reports show restaurant prices rising faster than grocery costs nationwide. Here, you still feel like youβre getting real value for your money, whether youβre ordering tacos al pastor or a full enchilada combo.
The atmosphere stays casual and family-friendly. Youβll see construction workers grabbing lunch, families celebrating birthdays, and solo diners enjoying a quiet meal. Thereβs no pressure to rush, which aligns with the traditional Mexican dining culture that emphasizes connection and shared time over speed. A local food blogger I follow once described the vibe as laid-back but dependable, and that sums it up well.
Location-wise, being on Bandera Road makes it accessible for both locals and visitors navigating the northwest side of the city. Parking is usually easy, and the restaurantβs visibility from the road helps first-timers feel confident pulling in. Online reviews across major platforms consistently mention cleanliness, friendly service, and reliable flavors, although a few note that peak hours can mean a short wait. Thatβs a fair trade-off for food that doesnβt cut corners.
No restaurant is perfect, and occasionally a dish might lean saltier than expected, or a wait might stretch longer during weekend brunch. Still, those moments are rare and openly acknowledged by the staff when they happen, which goes a long way in building trust.
Overall, this is the kind of place that becomes part of your routine rather than a one-time stop. The combination of a thoughtful menu, experienced kitchen practices, and a steady presence in the community makes it easy to recommend without hesitation.

It was a great experience and great food. The best part of the experience was the amazing customer service provided by Fausto. Definitely will be back.
The warm salsa served with the chips is awesome!! Be careful not to fill up on it before your meal! The chicken mole enchiladas were the perfect combo of spiciness and sweetness. The El Perfecto Margaritas were delicious enough to order a second one to share. Reggie our server made us feel like family on my first visit in 13 years. I remember there was an all female mariachi band playing back then! We'll be back soon, thanks for letting us hang out.
We celebrated my niece's birthday this past Friday and it was a party of 20, so I was hesitant about going since it was a large party. I was worried about the food coming out timely and the service, but I was impressed. My dirty martini was perfect, the food was delicious and came out timely. The service provided by Emily was astonishing. She took control of the group by explaining the menu, drinks and specialty items. She got all our orders correctly, had a cheerful personality and was just a wonderful experience. Thank you, Emily for making our evening at Pericos perfect.
Wife and I meeting her cousin after 52 years. Food was FANTASTIC!!!! So good I forgot to take photos of it. Got a pic of desert!
